I don’t remember the last time I didn’t work a bank holiday weekend, that includes Christmas, too! I barely remember my last full day off....

I was introduced to a training provider in Nottingham who were recommended to me by an ex-colleague who had moved from security and close protection, in to the investigation sector. Through doing my training with this company I was then given a stepping stone into the industry and never looked back. I worked as a surveillance agent out on the ground for several years before taking that huge leap of faith and starting Anderson & Co. That was in 2019, just before the pandemic. It couldn't of been a worse time, but what a journey it has been!

Experience is invaluable in this field. Consider working with an established private investigation firm to learn the ropes. This hands-on experience will help you understand the nuances of the job and build a network of contacts. Mentorship from experienced investigators can provide guidance and insights that are not available in textbooks. Tricks of the trade can only really be learnt through time, practice and working alongside some of the 'old boys' (and girls) who have been at it for years, decades in-fact!

Volunteering for pro bono cases or working on small projects can also help you gain practical experience and build a portfolio of successful investigations. This experience can be instrumental in establishing your reputation and attracting clients when you decide to work independently.

Try to get in to as many online sourcing groups as possible too. Unless you have a contact within the industry already, this is where you’ll find most of your work initially. Again, for myself, these groups provided a solid foundation for myself when I first came into the industry. Crikey, that feels like a lifetime ago!

While current mobile phones can provide clear photographic and video footage they are generally not used to obtain surveillance footage. Private Investigators should start out with both an overt camcorder, or two, that can be utilized for both static and mobile surveillance from their vehicle, along with several covert devices too. Covert devices are generally used for obtaining video and audio while carrying out foot follows in the public domain. As mentioned above, it’s important the footage is obtained legally, and produced to a professional standard so that it can used for legal proceedings if needs be. Any training provider wo offers an investigation course should teach this throughout the course. You will also need a reasonably good laptop, and the correct software for downloading footage, along with a surveillance prepared vehicle. A surveillance prepared vehicle is a vehicle that can be utilised for surveillance, in a variety of different locations. It needs to be able to fit in, discreetly. It needs to be kitted out with blacked out windows, curtains and wind deflectors as a minimum. It needs to be kitted out inside too, for you to be able spend long periods of time within it, while eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also provide some sort of toilet too. Not so glamorous after all, eh...

In-fact, there has been a rise throughout the last year or so with most companies paying their operatives £30 per hour, with on-the-job expenses for things such as food, parking and fuel usually added as an extra. It is common to earn £300 plus for a full day’s work as a freelancer.

Effective marketing, networking, and reputation management are crucial for maintaining a steady stream of work. I have seen many come and go over the years for this very reason. Most love the job, and want to succeed, but it is very much a niche and competitive industry, with only a limited amount of work available. As mentioned above, a day rate of £300-£400 a day is common and great if you are getting four or five days a week. Not so great if it’s only a day here and a day there.

What Makes A Narcissist Tick?

As a Private Investigator here in the UK, I hear the term “narcissist” being thrown out there almost daily, from potential clients, and rightly so. It is a term that has become so common over recent years.

Many of our cases that involve infidelity, romance fraud and catfishing, also have an element of control, manipulation and domestic abuse too. As a result, we often hear the perpetrators labelled as narcissists, and rightly so. It is a personality trait that I have come to learn a lot about over recent years. I often wonder how people turn into a narcissist. Is it genetic? Is it made through experience? Is it the result of childhood trauma? Or maybe even years of adoration from family members and peers?

This short blog explores the mindset of a narcissist. Their thoughts, feelings, desires and what makes them tick?

The very term "narcissist" often conjures images of self-absorbed individuals who are overly preoccupied with their appearance and achievements. However, the reality, I think, is far more complex. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a deep-seated psychological condition that impacts not only the individual's behaviour but also their relationships and self-worth. Narcissistic behaviour is seen in both male and females too. Understanding the mind of a narcissist requires delving into their thoughts, emotions, and motivations.

So, let’s break it down….

The Façade of Superiority:

At the heart of narcissism lies an inflated sense of self-importance and ego. Narcissists project an image of confidence, success, and superiority. They are often charming, engaging, and charismatic, drawing people in with their magnetic personalities. This facade, however, is a defensive mechanism, crafted to protect their fragile self-esteem from the harsh reality of their insecurities, that often stems from childhood. The need to be admired and recognized is paramount, driving many of their actions and decisions.

The Deep-Seated Insecurities:

Beneath the grandiose exterior that they create, narcissists often harbour life long, deep insecurities and a fragile sense of self-worth. This dichotomy creates a constant tug-of-war within their minds. It's this internal instability that leads them to seek validation and admiration from others compulsively.

This is what we hear most as Private Investigators, certainly with a large majority of our infidelity cases. To maintain their self-image, narcissists frequently resort to manipulation and control. They will often become very abusive. Sometimes emotionally, sometimes physically, sometimes both. They are skilled at identifying and exploiting the weaknesses and insecurities of others to bolster their own sense of power and importance. Gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation where the narcissist makes their victim question their reality, is a common tactic. By controlling the narrative and the emotions of those around them, narcissists create an environment where their superiority is reinforced.

The Lack of Empathy:

This goes hand in hand with the manipulation and abuse. Narcissists almost always lack any sort of empathy. They struggle to understand and connect with the emotions of others, often viewing them as tools to be used for their own gain. This detachment allows them to manipulate and hurt others without remorse. Relationships with narcissists are often one-sided, with the narcissist's needs and desires taking precedence over those of their partners, friends, or family members.

The Craving for Admiration:

While everyone enjoys a degree of recognition and praise, narcissists crave admiration on an almost pathological level. They thrive on the accolades, applause, and approval of others to validate their worth. This insatiable need often leads them to seek out positions of power and influence, where they can more easily garner the attention and admiration they so desperately seek.

The Fragility of the Ego:

Despite their outward bravado, narcissists are incredibly sensitive to criticism and perceived slights. Any challenge to their perceived superiority can trigger intense feelings of anger, resentment, and even rage. This fragility of the ego means that narcissists are often hypersensitive to any form of negativity, leading them to react disproportionately to even minor criticisms.

Is this even possible? For those entangled in relationships with narcissists, the experience can be draining and damaging. For narcissists themselves, the path to healing is very challenging but not impossible. It requires a willingness to confront their deep-seated insecurities, cultivate genuine empathy, and develop a more realistic and grounded sense of self-worth.

Are Narcissists born like that or created?

So, the general consensus is that it is not a genetic illness that an individual is born with. It is created by family upbringings. An abusive, neglectful parent, or parents, can cause a child to create a false persona and identity as a coping mechanism for the abuse, or neglect. Over many years that child, now becoming a teenager and young adult becomes more covert and subtle, or adaptive and manipulatively skilled at deception. They are great actors and often believe in their own lies. They also take great pride in their ability to deceive others and will for the most part always target those who they deem as weak and vulnerable, this makes their “job” a whole lot easier.

A narcissist will steal your perception, then your heart and then your soul! Many are not physically dangerous, but almost all are emotionally dangerous, which, from experience of dealing with victims of the above, you could argue is worse.

Conclusion:

The mind of a narcissist is a maze of contradictions—confidence masking insecurity, charm concealing manipulation, and a quest for admiration hiding a fragile ego. By understanding these complexities, we can better navigate interactions with narcissists, protect our own emotional well-being, and foster environments that encourage genuine empathy, self-awareness, and healing.

It is impossible to compete or get even with a narcissist. The only way to get out of any negative situation with a narcissist is to simply not engage. Just walk away. By doing so you don’t allow them the power, control and manipulation over you! Sadly, they will simply move on to their next unfortunate victim and rinse and repeat!

A Day in the Life of a Private Investigator in the UK.

When most people imagine the life of a Private Investigator, they often think of a world filled with smoking guns, high-speed chases, and shadowy figures lurking in alleys. However, the day-to-day reality of a Private investigators duties in the UK is much more nuanced and complex. From covert surveillance to deep diving into digital trails, taking calls and replying to emails.

Every day is different and varied and to give you an idea, here is a glimpse into a typical surveillance day for a Private Investigator.

Firstly, What Exactly Is A Surveillance Day?

A surveillance day is a period of time throughout the day where we have received an instruction to conduct surveillance for a client. Our client base is quite varied, from private clients to legal and commercial too.

Our client base is made up of private clients from just about every walk of life and then solicitors, landlords, HR departments, CEO’s, Company directors and Insurance companies, to name a few.

This blog is specifically orientated around an investigation that we recently conducted for a corporate client. I cannot disclose names and name places, for obvious reasons, but I will most certainly try to give you a good idea of what it entailed throughout day one of the investigation, and the evening prior. Hopefully, by doing so, it will give you an idea of what a day as a Private Investigator in the UK is really like.

Blog writing is not my forte, but something I feel is a must in this day and age. I hope by writing and sharing blogs it not only demonstrates a little bit of knowledge and answers all the common questions, but creates some sort of trust and transparency within an industry that quite frankly lacks it. Anyway, here goes…

I had already gone through all the job details and specifics with the operative who was going to be working with me several days prior, and arranged to meet him at the hotel we were staying in for the week at 19:00 on the Sunday evening before we were due to start the investigation. The investigation was booked in for five consecutive days, from Monday through until end of play on the Friday.

My operative had a good idea of what we were doing, where we were doing it and what the client’s objective, and requirements were. I had also provided him with a job brief to go through a few days before.

Our subject (the individual we were putting under surveillance) however lived in a densely populated and reasonably affluent area, with very limited roadside parking available. We therefore needed to conduct a drive or walk by of the area to better understand the lay of the land and where we would be plotting up the following day.

It is hugely unprofessional to turn up on a job without doing so and therefore having little to no idea of the lay of the land and local demographic where you are going to be conducting surveillance throughout the coming days. Google maps are great, but often areas can change and look totally different to what you have seen online. Google maps does not always give a true and recent reflection of the area to be surveilled. Nothing quite beats the naked eye, in real time.

The start of an investigation...

Turning up to an investigation early in the morning and having to drive up and down a street to work out where you can park can often raise suspicions before you have even started. The general idea is that when we arrive at the location first thing in the morning, we pull straight into our OP, otherwise known as observation post, knock the engine off and dive straight into the back of our vehicles. This whole process should only take a few seconds. Of course, there are times when you pull into position to start a job and suddenly someone is outside having a cigarette, walking their dog or coming back from a night shift, or out in the garden (depending what time you start).

Sometimes we cannot dive in the back of our vehicles right away, and then it becomes a bit of a game of cat and mouse while we wait for the opportunity to do so. You also don’t want a local resident three doors down, who you aren’t aware of, to notice you diving in the back of your vehicle. Straightaway that will raise suspicion and before you know it you’ll have half the estate around your vehicle wanting to know what’s going on. I have never had this happen, but I have heard some horror stories!

It is hugely important for us, that when we are moving into position at the start of any investigation we are also scanning the surrounding area too. You just never know who is about. These first few minutes of a surveillance investigation are often the most important and tricky moments. We must get in to position quickly, but discreetly while minimising any risk and exposure.

By conducting a drive or walk by the evening before we are simply able to better understand the area and get a feel for the place prior to going live with surveillance the following day. Not all investigations allow us this luxury, but this one investigation did. It may be that the surveillance has only been booked for eight hours, starting in the mid-afternoon. In that case I would then arrive an hour or so before and carry out the above.

Anyway, myself and my operative took a drive down to the area where surveillance was going to be conducted the following day. We went in one vehicle. We took a drive through the area and were quickly able to establish a couple of areas that were suitable for us to “plot up” from the following morning. The only issues were that there were several work vans on the roadside that could potentially block a direct line sight on the address we needed to observe. We took an educated guess at those vans leaving early and therefore allowing us to take those spaces. It was important we took these spaces as they were not overlooked by any properties on the nearside and were a safe distance away from the subject’s home address.

We also had a plan B if the vans were still there in the morning, although plan B carried a little bit more risk and exposure. So, we finalised our plan of attack, headed back to the hotel, and retired for the night.

The investigation was due to start at 6am the following morning and therefore myself and my operative decided we would meet in the hotel car park at 5:30am.

Going live with the investigation...

The following morning, we both met in the car park. We were too early for breakfast which is always a tad disappointing. I'm a sucker for a Premier Inn "Full English". We prepped our vehicles (cleaned the windows, and a few other bits and bobs) and made our way to the address where the investigation was to be conducted. It was only a short drive away.

As we drove in to the housing estate, I was pleased to see there was now only one van parked on the roadside, and I was able to slot straight in to position in front of it, allowing me a direct line of sight on the home address of our subject. As I pulled into position, I had a high garden fence to my left, and large detached properties to my right. The properties on my right, were all on the opposite side of the road and set back quite a bit, and despite some having CCTV I was well out of sight and felt comfortable and safe from any sort of exposure and compromise. They had hedgerows and foliage at the front of their gardens too, allowing me a little bit of cover from any direct exposure.

I quickly scanned the properties for any third-party persons coming out their front doors, or peering from behind their curtains, and was happy that nobody was about or paying any attention and dived straight into the back of my vehicle. I gave my other operative the all clear and took an opening shot of the address, we were now live! By all accounts it was a great start.

We decided I would remain on the “trigger” throughout the day. Meaning I would stay in position with eyes on the address, and as soon as there was any movement away from the home address of our subject, I would give my operative the “standby” and he would then take the follow from a safe and short distance away, I would then join the follow a few seconds behind. We also needed to identify individuals visiting the address, so it was important that we always had a clear and direct line of sight on the address.

Several hours passed by and the street became quite busy with lots of activity, but our subject did not appear until 10:30am. He exited in his very obvious vehicle and we took the follow a short distance to a location where we were able to observe a brief meeting within a car park from distance. Our subject then returned home.

What did the client require? What were the main objectives?

There were several key requirements from our client. The first was to identify who our subject was meeting and engaging with throughout each day, and to try and establish the context of those meetings. Secondly, to obtain evidence of how our subject was purchasing things, and lastly to obtain photographic evidence of anyone visiting the home address. It was a typical Corporate Investigation.

Just after 12:30pm our subject exited his home address again. We took the follow away from the city centre and to a country pub, approximately 45 minutes away. The follow became a little tricky as we followed out into the rural countryside. At several points throughout the follow there was only our subject and us on the road, with lots of T-junction’s and slow and windy roads. It become a game of cat and mouse.

It is always important that we stay near enough to our subject so as that we do not lose sight or get stuck behind a slow-moving tractor or held at traffic lights with the subject pushing through, but not close enough so that every time the subject looks in his mirrors, he sees us. There are certain tactics that we use, and thankfully by doing so we were able to stay with him and unnoticed until he arrived totally unaware at the relatively secluded pub.

Our subject entered the pub by himself and was dressed reasonably well (shirt and trousers). At this point it was clear that he was most likely going to be meeting someone, as our client had suspected. Several minutes passed by and by now both myself and my operative had made our way into the pub also and sat on a table within ear shot of our subject. As expected, two males arrived within fifteen minutes of each other, and they sat around the table with our subject. Food and drinks were ordered and they discussed “all things business” between them. If you didn't know any different you would assume they were just three middle class, business types, having a working lunch...

The pub was quite busy and frustratingly there were brief moments where it was not clear what was being discussed. There was lot’s of background noise from other patrons and the staff within the pub. This is quite normal within a public house type setting. I noticed a fruit machine was situated right next to their table, so decided to have a little play on the machine. By doing so we were able to get up close to our subject and his associates without them batting an eye lid, until we hit the jackpot and cashed out £140 in pound coins. That didn’t go unnoticed though and if I am being brutally honest brought us a little bit of unwanted attention.

It turned out to be a win, win situation though. We had managed to get right on top of our subject for a good twenty minutes or so, obtain audio of the meeting and make a few extra quid while doing so. I am not a gambling man, but this one particular gamble was worth it, in more ways than one.

I then left the pub and returned to my vehicle outside on the car park. We were keen to identify the vehicles that the unknown males had arrived in too. My operative remained in the pub and gave me the “standby” when they were about to leave. There were two very high-end vehicles parked outside, with one displaying a very obvious private plate referencing the unknown male's name. It was obvious that they belonged to the two male associates, and low and behold they did! Our clients suspicions had now been confirmed. Often it can take several days to obtain anything tangible. To get this piece of evidence on day one was a great start to the investigation.

By remaining inside the pub my operative was also able to confirm how the meal and drinks were being paid for. As mentioned, one of the objectives was to identify how the subject was making purchases.

It was now just after 3pm, and our subject made his way back in the general direction of his home address. A short stop was made at a petrol station on route, before returning to the home address at just after 4pm. We returned into our OP’s and there were no further sightings of him throughout the next couple of hours. We then stood down for the day at 6pm as planned.

My operative and I returned to the hotel for the evening. We decided to grab a bite to eat before heading back up to our rooms. My operative handed over his SD cards that he had been using to film on throughout the day and his day was now done.

I however, now had to download all the footage we had obtained throughout the entire day, and let me tell you, there was quite a lot. My day was far from over. If you are a Private Investigator you will understand exactly where I am coming from regarding what happens next.

I now had to time and date stamp the video footage, then merge it in to one long video, then pull photographs from it. I then had to produce a legally binding report with all the images, that could be used as evidence at a later date. This is always done at the end of each day when conducting surveillance and is often a timely process. If memory serves me right, I think there was about sixty pages of images for day one, with two images on each page and a detailed description of each what's happening in each image.

Fast forward three and a half hours and the surveillance report for day one was now finally complete. I had taken several phone calls while doing so, while dealing with other ongoing clients and email enquiries too. All this after twelve hours surveillance and being up since the crack of dawn. Surveillance days can be long, intense and tiring.

This is all part of every surveillance investigation though and the fixed hourly rate that is agreed and charged. We don’t charge any silly extras for this. Any company that is offering their surveillance services for absolute peanuts, be aware of. They are more than likely going to provide you with nothing but grainy and distorted footage taken from a mobile phone, if anything at all. You certainly won’t be getting a legally binding and professional report that will be admissible in court and may take many hours to produce!

It really bugs me when I talk to clients who try to haggle me down to nothing after explaining exactly what it entails, or because they have just spoken to another company who has offered a full investigation for peanuts. Said companies often have zero online presence outside of their glossy website that you will find via a paid Google Ad, be very, very careful! Ring around, and please don't go with the first company who have given a sales pitch worthy of an Oscar!

Anyway, there are many potential client's however who appreciate the time, effort and professionalism that goes into any investigation. Surveillance is a fine art and a skill that requires time, effort, patience, hard work and professionalism, and many understand that.

So, day one was now complete. It was now midnight, and I was ready for bed. I set the alarm for 5am the following day where we would repeat the entire process again, until the end of play Friday evening.

As you are probably aware by now, the reality of Private investigations are quite different to how it is often portrayed on the television, via movies and TV programs. I haven't mentioned toilet breaks, while on plot, or trying to stay cool and comfortable while on plot, or eating one's lunch while trying to remain completely covert and undetected by passers by.

There is little glamour with the job. In-fact quite the opposite. It is however often very interesting and rewarding. When client's lives or livelihoods (or both) are on the line, and they have exhausted all other avenues, there is no better feeling than being able to provide them with irrefutable evidence and clarification that they so desperately need.

First Of All.

Who Am I? Who Are We?

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Dan and I run Anderson & Co Surveillance & Private Investigators Ltd, based in the heart of Birmingham and established in the summer of 2019.

Some of you will know me, but most of you won’t. Some of you reading this may be ex-colleagues, some ex-clients, some new clients, some potential clients, and some of you may have just stumbled across this by pure chance.

Writing blogs is really not my forte, so I apologise in advance. Blog writing however, is now a huge part of the running of any business with a large online presence, in this day and age. I believe it is also important for us to share a little bit of who we are and what we do. In turn, I hope it creates an element of trust and transparency, within an industry that quite frankly lacks it. We don't just hide behind a well-made, glossy website. I hope it also demonstrates a little bit of industry knowledge too.

I started Anderson & Co Surveillance & Private Investigators Ltd back in the late summertime of 2019 after several years working as a surveillance agent throughout the UK, and abroad. I had worked for the better known and larger Private Investigation companies on a self-employed basis. A large part of the investigations carried out throughout those years were insurance fraud and corporate investigations, along with matrimonial type investigations too.

After a couple of years, I found myself in a situation where I simply needed more in the professional sense. I was tired of waiting for the phone to go, or for a job to pop up on a Sunday evening for six hours, and that job be a two-hour drive away from home, or the likes of.

At the time there was a huge influx of new surveillance operatives coming into the industry and I noticed work via the online sourcing groups, and direct connections I had, was starting to dry up. I was also aware of several guys and girls who had been in the industry for many years having to leave because of the lack of consistent work they were getting. It was a real problem.

It was a tad concerning at the time, but then I had a stroke of luck....It may have been right place, right time....

So, I had been asked to cover a couple of days surveillance over the course of a weekend and happily took the job. On the Sunday morning and prior to starting the second days surveillance, I received a message from a clearly irritated client, saying that she had been given my details by the company I was working for, and I was to correspond with her throughout the day, as the company she had booked the surveillance with were not in the office on Sundays, and therefore there was no way to correspond and report back to the client with updates. They hadn't informed me at all, so I was quite surprised.

Anyway, I thought nothing of it and got on with the day. I conducted the surveillance throughout the afternoon and early evening, and advised the client that I would have the surveillance report done within a few hours of getting home on that particular evening. I told the client I’d have to send it to the company I was working for, and they would then forward it on to her. She understood, and nothing more was said.

The client was extremely thankful for the two days surveillance. She mentioned that she had surveillance carried out over previous weeks and it was all a bit of a mess, adding to the distress she was already experiencing. She was not happy with the lack of communication and was left feeling very disappointed and let down by the company. She asked me if I would be conducting the following weeks surveillance too, but I was not able to do so as I was committed elsewhere.

Anyway, a few days later the client contacted me again and asked me if I would be able to assist her directly, and of course at this point I advised her to finish her contracted hours with the company she had hired, and if she still required assistance following that, she could contact me directly at a later date and I would see what I could do. I thought that was fair and reasonable.

Several weeks passed by, and out of the blue the client contacted me again. She was keen for me to take on the investigation as she had now finished all her hours with the previous company. She asked me for a quote for a large chunk of hours of surveillance over the coming weeks. I quoted her an industry standard for the hours she required, to which she was quite surprised. It was a large chunk of money cheaper than what she had previously been paying. I was also quite surprised to hear what she had paid for, and what she had actually been provided with and received. It was way over the industry standard and guidelines.

So, I took on the investigation over the course of the following weeks and was able to continue obtaining evidence for the client. The client was in a very sad situation. She had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and was now stuck in a wheelchair with an abusive husband of whom was having an affair. Not only was he having an affair, but it was with one of the client’s long-term carers.

The client also had evidence of serious domestic abuse she was receiving at home but wanted to now prove his infidelity too. She was an older woman, who was financially stable, and now wanted to make sure that when she passed away, he would not receive a penny. She would even joke about what a shock he’d get once she had passed. She tried to remain jovial and upbeat with her dark sense of humour, despite her unfortunate and desperate circumstances.

We finished the investigation and for many months afterwards she would send me brief messages and voice notes, updating me regarding any progress with her case. As mentioned, always with a touch of dark humour.

Anyway, throughout those previous weeks that I was conducting surveillance for my client, I registered Anderson & Co as a Limited company. I had a website designed and put together, and decided to take that giant leap of faith into the unknown, along with a very small team of trusted operatives who have gone on to work alongside and for me throughout the last five years.

How did we find new clients?

How does one go about finding clients with zero online presence and a website ranking somewhere on page 45 of Google?

It was all a tad daunting; the website had gone live and we were now a limited company. I needed to find clients, and I needed to find them quickly.

So, I then discovered Google Ads and Bark. We all know what Google Ads is. Bark, however, for those that aren’t aware is an online platform where potential clients make an enquiry and companies can then reply to those leads. The catch is, we must buy credits to reply to those leads. Now, I’d heard nothing but negative comments about Bark from others within the Private Investigation industry. For the most part it was described as a waste of time and money. I had no choice though and hoped through throwing large amounts at it, I would hopefully be able to land some job’s and investigations and start to build the company from there on. I mean, at this point I had no other choice.

Thankfully, again, I hit a stroke of luck and landed some reasonably decent sized job's that required large scale investigations. One of those clients even went on to become a good friend of mine and my accountant. Throughout the following months we were able to expand rapidly via using Google Ads and Bark, but then the pandemic arrived, and everything came to an abrupt halt.

I couldn’t believe it. I had finally taken that giant leap of faith, invested every penny I had into the business, got it up and running, and now gathered some momentum, and then the world just came to a complete stop.

Maybe It Just Wasn’t Meant To Be After All…..

Maybe I should of downed tools, and got another job for the foreseeable future, at least until the the pandemic was no more?

I noticed that a lot of the guys and girls within the industry went off and did other things, or furloughed themselves. For me, that was not an option though and I saw this as an opportunity to try and expand the business further….

As I'm sure you will remember, for several months we simply could not travel. I remember there being roadblocks on every main route out of town. Surveillance was an absolute no go, and to be honest, people weren’t really going anywhere anyway, other than to their neighbours back garden for wine, cheese and Tequila.

Throughout this time though we noticed a huge increase in the need for people traces and background checks. There was a huge increase in people using online dating apps, and generally engaging online, while stuck at home and in the garden throughout those spring and summer months. That had a really positive effect on us, and we were inundated with background checks that were usually orientated around some sort of catfishing or romance scam. It bizarrely was one of the busiest times we’ve had to date! Every cloud and silver lining and all that....

So, we rode the storm that was the pandemic, and continued doing the above for the first two years or so, and it worked out well, despite the obstacles we had faced. It could often be very stressful and time consuming, especially replying to the tens of leads a day that came in via platforms such as Bark and the hours on the phone trying to get jobs over the line. Often it would be early hours of the morning, no joke! It was tough, and tiring, but it worked, and it was worth it!

2022 Onwards. The World Returning To Normal....

As the world returned to some sort of relative normality, I started to notice more and more companies starting up from nowhere. I was having more and more conversations with potential clients that ended in nothing. More and more conversations that ended with ‘I’ve been quoted cheaper by so and so”, with that “so and so” being a company I’d never heard of a lot of the time. I am all for fair competition, but this was not. It became ridiculous. The Private Investigation sector is still unregulated and therefore anyone can have a well made website put together and claim to be a Private Investigator with absolutely zero experience in surveillance and investigations. Sadly there are many that do. I have spoken about this in some of our other blogs.

This was of course disheartening as we have always stuck to industry standards and guidelines that make it fair for everyone. I simply couldn’t match or even come close to a lot of the quotes that were being thrown our way via leads we had gone for on Bark or calls via Google Ads.

It had now sadly become a race to the bottom with Google Ads and Bark, and yet again I was left with a new obstacle to overcome, but by this point we had built a reasonable sized client base of returning and ongoing clients, so we always had that to fall back on if things became worryingly quiet.

I knew moving forward the only way to expand was to engage with an SEO company. Again, I had heard all of these horror stories from Private Investigation companies that had hired them, and spent a small fortune only to be in the same position on Google twelve months later.

In all honesty the first company I tried came as a recommendation from someone within our industry, and six months later, despite adding lots of content to the website, we were still down on page 30 something. We were nowhere to be seen. I was then given another recommendation, and within days, bingo, we were all of a sudden appearing on page one of Google for Birmingham and all the main keywords related to what we do and offer!

This had a massive impact on the business almost instantly and I was now able to start coming away from Google Ads and Bark and now rely on organic positioning via Google, where, to be honest, for the most part the clients had already done a little research, knew exactly what they wanted and had a rough idea of the cost too. Dealing with such clients was all very new and refreshing. It was a breath of fresh air!

It was a totally new way of doing business. Gone were the days of sending tens of messages a day to leads (many dead leads) and then having to spend hours trying to justify and explain who we are, to then have potential clients try and haggle the price down to nothing to compete with everyone else racing to the bottom through desperation. That simply didn’t work anymore!

Thankfully, here we are now in 2024 and approaching our five-year anniversary. We are now recognised as one of a handful of leading and established Private Investigation companies here in the UK, but based centrally in Birmingham.

Where Have We Carried Out Investigations?

Over recent years we have conducted investigations in just about every corner of the UK, and further afield in places such as Thailand, Portugal, Malta and Ireland too.

We have also carried out background checks, people traces and family tree type investigations for clients from North America, Australia, The Maldives, Sweden and South Africa too, to name a few. We have a large, international client base, which for me is really interesting. I find it fascinating dealing with people from such varied backgrounds from all four corners of the globe! We had a client recently from The Maldives. Who knew that it wasn't just 7 star resorts and sand bars. I now have the equivalent of a masters degree in Maldivian politics as a result of many lengthy conversations with my client....Joking about the degree, of course!

In the early days a large chunk of what we did was matrimonial based, driving the length and breadth of the country through the night, in all weathers, staying in hotels, and living off Shell meal deals and Costa coffees. We would be out at all times of the day, seven days a week, bank holidays and Christmas included. It’s not a glamorous way of life, like many may think. Although despite that, it is a job that carries a huge amount of privilege, satisfaction and reward.

We have also now expanded massively into the people tracing and background check side of the industry. This now forms a much larger part of what we do alongside all the different types of surveillance that we conduct too. Surveillance investigations vary from matrimonial surveillance to fake employee sickness, insurance fraud and corporate investigations too. As mentioned though, a large chunk of our day to day workload is orientated around mainly background checks and traces, for varying reasons!

Who knows what the next five years will bring? Who knows where it will take us? Currently, however, I am immensely proud of what we have achieved despite the odds being against us, especially in the early days. It' s a very niche industry and is ultra competitive. It can also be ruthless. Nothing is a given, nothing is guaranteed, but I feel incredibly grateful, proud and privileged to have got this far, with the reputation we now have. Thank you to each and every client that trusts us with their cases, often with their lives and livelihoods on the line too. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Whatever happens, I guess I’ll have a few more grey hairs (if any hair at all), an increasing number of frown lines, and I’ve no doubt an extra few inches around the waist, which is fine. As long as we continue in the same positive direction, with the same amazing team around me, and continuing with lot's of positive results, great feedback and happy clients to go with!

Real World Scenario's and cases;

I won't mention names' or places, but we have often been able to piece together a case by just using social media. We recently took on a case that involved a very tricky subject who did not want to be found. The client had previously tried with another private investigator and had no luck. The last known address hadn't been occupied by our subject for quite some time.

Anyway we were provided with a list of email addresses that were connected to him previously. From one of the emails addresses we were then able to find a Google account under an alias name. The alias name was a nickname he had used in his youth. We found two very recent reviews that the subject had bizarrely left on Google. Although he likely felt quite safe using his alias name. This gave us "an area", where both locations were within a couple of miles of each other. So, what now?

So we started looking at individuals who worked at both of these places and after several hours came across a female who was reasonably active online. We found images shared with our subject at what appeared to be a "night out". The next problem was, the female we were looking at had a very common name. Her date of birth was not shown on any of her social media, however, scrolling through her Instagram account we came across her birthday celebration's from years gone by. So, we now had a full name and date of birth of a female who it was very likely was a very good friend or partner of our subject.

We decided to run a trace on the female, with the hope of seeing our subject showing some form of a digital footprint at the address, however, he did not. He had cleverly covered all angles by not registering, applying or purchasing anything in his name at the address. He simply was not showing anywhere since his previous last known address, which had been vacated many months prior.

So, we were confident that our subject was 'staying' with the female, but being confident is simply not good enough. We needed to be absolutely sure so that our client could instruct legal proceedings against our subject. We discussed two options with our client, those being static surveillance on the address or a couple of door knocks under the guise of being a parcel delivery driver. The client wanted to keep the budget to a minimum so door knocks were decided. It, of course was a bit of a gamble as we had no idea of his movements, whether he was working, and therefore him being home or not. We knew, or took an educated guess, that the female we suspected he lived with worked between 9am and 6pm, according to the opening times of her workplace, so if someone was home between those hours, throughout the week, it would likely be him. Ideally we needed him home alone, so that he would answer the door, and we could identify him.

So, we arrive at the address for 08:00 and low and behold we see the female exiting shortly after, just before 9am. It was unclear whether anybody was inside the house. So to try and gather a little bit more intelligence we decided to knock on the next door neighbours door with a parcel labelled for our subject. Without any sort of hesitation the next door neighbour said "he's next door, wrong house". We apologised, wished him well and off we went. At this point we decided to knock on the door where we suspected the subject was living and low and behold after a few seconds he answered. He was told we had a parcel for him and asked him to confirm his name, to which he did without a second thought. He received the parcel, thanked me, and off we went - now with a box of chocolates at his disposal.

Bingo, we had now identified our subject at the address and were able to hand over covert footage obtained as proof of address! The case was then handed back over to the bailiffs and we have not heard anything since. This all started from an email address we knew he'd used, which was connected to a Google account where he had left reviews, along with a stroke of luck thrown in too!

How Much Is It to Hire a Private Investigator?

The cost of hiring a private investigator in the UK can vary based on several factors, including the complexity of the case, the location, the experience of the investigator, and the services required. It is impossible to give an absolute and concise figure, however, I will try to give an outline of the costing involved for the most common enquiries, what may be expected, and why. The below is very much an industry standard and may vary slightly depending on the company.

The first and most important one....

Hourly Rates:

Private investigators often charge on an hourly basis. Rates can range from £40 to £140 per hour, depending on the complexity and nature of the investigation.

More complex cases, such as background checks or corporate investigations, tend to be charged at a fixed rate. Surveillance however, can vary from the bare minimum of £40 per hour to as much as £140 per hour if a large team is needed. Some may be VAT registered, some may not be.

So, what does one get for £40 per hour?

If you’re wondering how much a private investigator costs in the UK, £40 per is common rate for static surveillance – but what exactly does it cover?

A dedicated surveillance operative on location:

One trained professional is assigned to observe a fixed area such as a home, workplace, or another location of interest.

Static surveillance from a vehicle or observation post:

The operative stays discreetly stationed throughout the job, capturing footage and photographic evidence according to the client’s needs.

High-quality video and photo evidence gathering:

Clear, date- and time-stamped footage is created using professional-grade equipment.

Post-surveillance reporting:

Once the job is complete, the investigator returns home to compile a fully documented and legally admissible report. This includes all relevant evidence, making sure it stands up in court if required.

Full day commitment beyond the on-site hours:

While you may only pay for 8 hours of on-site work (£320 total), the operative likely drives 1–2 hours each way. This makes the job a 12-hour+ day.

Footage review and report writing:

Reviewing the footage and compiling the report often takes up to 2 hours—extending the workday to 14 hours in total.

Real hourly breakdown: closer to £22 per hour:

When you account for travel and reporting time, the actual private investigator rate per hour drops significantly.

Unseen out-of-pocket costs:

The investigator may need to refuel, grab meals, and cover other small expenses, which aren’t included in their standard private investigator fees.

What Does One Get for £50 Per Hour or More?

When it comes to mobile surveillance, the job becomes more complex - and so does the cost. Here’s what’s usually included in this private investigator rate in the UK:

Mobile surveillance across varied environments:

Involves following a subject across public transport, shops, streets, or venues - often for hours at a time.

Minimum of two operatives:

Effective mobile surveillance requires two trained investigators to work safely, discreetly, and without losing the subject.

Advanced tactics and coordination:

Two operatives allow for split coverage, simple handovers, and reduced risk of exposure. These are tactics that simply don’t work solo.

Double the cost, double the coverage:

That £50 per hour becomes £100 per hour for two operatives, or £90 depending on the agency. More complex cases may require even more personnel.

Additional unpaid hours:

Travel to and from the location (1–2 hours each way) plus reporting time can easily extend a paid 8-hour job into a 14-hour workday.

Real hourly breakdown is often much lower:

After all time and expenses are factored in, the operative’s effective rate may drop significantly.

Out-of-pocket expenses add up:

Fuel, food, and operational prep often come out of the investigator’s own pocket, yet they stay included in the fixed private investigator fees.

When asking how much does it cost for a UK private investigator, it’s important to weight skill, risk, and hours, not just the hourly price tag.

So what does one get for £50 per an hour or more?

Now we're talking about mobile surveillance. Mobile surveillance is firstly more labour intensive. It can often involve following an individual throughout long periods and distances. Sometimes on and off public transport, into shopping areas, restaurants and so on. This takes a bit more skill, patience and hard work, and therefore naturally comes at a higher cost. It's also worth noting that any mobile surveillance job should require two operatives as a minimum. This is to allow the operatives to work in a safe and professional manner, minimising any risk of exposure and allowing them to work in a more efficient and professional manner. There are certain tactics that are utilised by having two operatives on a job. These tactics simply don't work alone. Deploying just one operative on a mobile surveillance job is often asking for trouble. Have you ever tried to follow anyone alone throughout the course of a day, remaining with eyes on at all times and having them under full control? If not, give it a try, see how you get on.....Then try it with two of you. How much easier and safer is it now.....

So that standard £50 per hour now becomes £100 per hour, or in some cases £90 depending on the company. For much more complex and larger cases, the rate may increase by £40 or £50 per hour, per extra operative needed. Bare in mind that each operative has to go through the exact same process of commuting to the job and back, along with fuelling up and the old meal deal, or two - for those of us that simply don't have time to meal prep because we were up until the early hours finishing yesterdays report!

Day rates:

For those jobs that require a full 10-12 hours surveillance, private investigator day rates may be offered. A day rate is usually charged at £450-£500 per day, per operative. If the full twelve hours is needed, then this would always be the way to go as it works out slightly cheaper than the hourly rate throughout the course of the 12 hours.

For the much larger corporate jobs that may require several operatives for several weeks, then this day rate can sometimes be brought down slightly.

The Sad Truth And Reality!

This blog really follows on from the one I did a few days ago orientated around 'How to find a trustworthy Private investigator’. The two, essentially go hand in hand.

I however wanted to be a little bit more specific with regards to the fraudsters within our industry. Will it make much of a difference? Probably not. I will however feel like I have done my bit, for now. So, here we go….

In the realm of private investigations, where truth and justice are sought out by skilled professionals, sadly, a dark and shadowy underbelly exists that tarnishes the reputation of the industry.

While many private investigators work diligently and honestly to uncover facts and unveil the unknown, a small but significant and successful number engage in fraudulent activities that compromise the integrity of the entire industry. When I say 'successful' I am referring to their success in extorting large amounts of money from innocent, every day, hardworking people, who are often desperate and in a time of need.

This blog will shed a little bit of light on the unsettling issue of fraudsters within the private investigations industry, exploring their methods, motivations, and the steps that can be taken to mitigate their negative impact.

The Rising Concern:

Private investigators play a critical role in various scenarios, from corporate investigations to personal matters such as infidelity cases, people traces and background checks. Our skills in gathering evidence, conducting surveillance, and analysing information are sought after for the ability to uncover truths that may not be readily apparent. However, the presence of fraudulent individuals within our profession raises concerns about ethics, accuracy, and accountability.

Fraudulent Methods:

Fraudsters within the private investigations industry often utilize a range of deceitful methods and tactics to exploit clients and manipulate information. These generally include the following:

Fake reviews: Are there hundreds of fake reviews left over a two-to-three-week period. Are they written in poor English and completely generic and similar in nature? Are there any negative reviews anywhere stating that the company is a fraud? If you carry out a basic Google search you will often find some form of negative feedback left somewhere telling ‘perspective clients’ to stay away because of their incompetent or fraudulent ways. I always say, “there’s no smoke without fire” and such negative feedback will often have a large element of truth to it.

Fabricated evidence: Creating false documents, photos, or videos to present as legitimate evidence. This may be very tricky for a client to be able to establish, however make sure beforehand you are going to receive a legally binding report. Time and date stamped evidence is an absolute must along with professionally obtained photographs taken from handheld cameras and covert devices. Not mobile phone footage or text messages with basic drivel and data allegedly obtained. Ensure the investigator stands by his or her evidence and is willing for it to be used in a court of law if required.

Misrepresentation: Presenting themselves as legitimate, accredited and time served professionals when they are not, or falsely claiming affiliations with awarding bodies, regulators, other companies, legal companies, and the media.

Illegal Services: Offering Illegal services that simply cannot be carried out. Phone hacking and obtaining medical records being the main ones. These are common enquiries that we receive and therefore the fraudsters know this and exploit it, under the false pretext of being able to carry out such work reliably. They will often demand cash for such services due to the nature of it, and in some instances will even state that the services are illegal hence them pushing for a cash payment. They know they will not provide any sort of service and therefore by not making any sort of digital & electronic transaction the client cannot seek a refund via their bank or credit card company.

Extortion: Threatening to expose sensitive information to partners or immediate family or work connections when confronted and exposed. In some cases, even demanding further fees. If a background check or trace is taking many weeks to complete, yet the company states they need more time and budget as they have already gone above and beyond, stop right there. You’re more than likely not going to receive anything and nor will have they spent several hundred hours on the case already.

Exploitative billing: Overcharging clients for services, adding hidden fees, and billing for unnecessary tasks. The most common one when a company charges the client for three, or four operatives and only deploys one. Also, background Checks and basic traces at three and four times the industry standard. If you ring around and talk with different companies, you will get a feel for what the ‘industry standard’ is for the required service you require. Anything way out of those costings, avoid, and ask why. Ask for a breakdown of costing.

Pressurising sales tactics: They will often be pushy. Asking what you do for a living to get a flavour of whether you have money or not. They will then manipulate the quote depending on what they think you can afford. They may then ask for a credit or debit card payment upfront to secure the job; this will be a non-refundable deposit. In some instances, they will advise that they send someone to collect cash from you at, or near to your home address. It will often be large amounts. I have heard horror stories of background checks being charged a £5000, surveillance at £250 per hour for basic static observations where only one, or two operatives are mainly required, basic and simple people traces at £1000 plus, with zero interest in even attempting to carry out the work. It’s absolutely disgusting and deplorable behaviour.

Fake satellite offices: Most private investigators operate with a satellite office for safety reasons, where we may use the meeting rooms for meetings and shared workspace in required. Some, mainly the fraudsters will have many tens of satellite addresses and offices all over the country. The idea behind this is so that when a potential client types into Google "Private Investigator near me", the fraudulent company comes up first. Little does the client know they're talking to someone 250 miles away. Most of the landing pages you see will be registered at completely random residential addresses and will all be directed back to one website, that acts very similar to an umbrella company. There will not be a Private Investigators office located down behind your local post office, in deepest, rural Cornwall, or a tiny village in Mid-Wales, or next to the local working men’s club at the back of your local housing estate! Look for the ones on your local Google maps listings, those with some form of an online presence, social media, legitimate reviews and verifications and so on.

Fake affiliations and registrations: Claiming to be affiliated with the ABI, WAPI, and UKPIN, along with being ICO registered, GDPR compliant and fully insured. Often the fraudsters will use the logos of these organisations on their websites to create a professional and legitimate online presence. They may also have lots of fake media links to newspapers and TV channels. This is also to create the image of being on TV or in the newspaper. This in turn creates an element of trust, transparency, and professionalism. In fact, it is nothing more than further deceit. Click on the links, are they live, do they connect to articles and reports, or are they just logos used to create a professional image.

Motivations Behind The Fraud: Understanding the motivations behind these fraudulent activities can provide insight into the factors that contribute to their prevalence. Financial gain is often a primary driver, as the lucrative nature of certain investigative assignments may tempt individuals to cut corners or engage in dishonest practices to secure more clients and higher revenue. Additionally, the small and competitive nature of the industry can lead some investigators to resort to unethical tactics to outshine their peers.

Impacts on Clients and the Industry: The presence of fraudsters in the private investigations industry can have profound consequences. Clients who fall victim to these individuals may suffer financial losses, emotional distress, and compromised legal outcomes. Often clients are vulnerable and in a time of need. The fraudsters know that, and exploit with little care or concerns for the client. It's all about getting the money in their back account, or back pocket as is often the case. Nothing more.

Moreover, the reputation of the entire industry becomes further damaged, as public trust in the credibility of private investigators is eroded and further damaged. The industry does not have a great reputation as it is. These fraudsters only add to that. Legitimate professionals may find it challenging to build relationships with clients who are sceptical due to the actions of a few bad actors. We often talk with clients who are suspicious of who we are because of the previous fraudulent and incompetent private investigators they have unfortunately already dealt with.

What do we do then?

How do we mitigate the issue? How do we stop this from happening?

In truth, I don’t think we can stop it. We can however maybe minimise the above issues. I believe the below points may help.

Enhanced regulation: The industry needs to tighten up licensing requirements and conduct thorough checks to ensure only qualified and professional individuals are allowed to practice. This must be a starting point.

Transparency: Investigators should provide clear contracts and sample work, outlining services, fees, and expected outcomes to avoid misunderstandings.

Online platforms: Developing trusted online platforms that connect clients with certified investigators can help filter out the fraudsters. If a company has no online presence other than his, or her paid Google Ads, why? If they are not part of trusted networks, again why?

Action and reporting: These fraudsters need to be reported to the police and trading standards. They need to be held accountable for their dishonest and deceitful ways. It may seem like a pointless task, but rest assured if Trading Standards for example receive no end of complaints about one company or individual, they will likely investigate, at some point. It may take a while, but it’s better than nothing. At least make the fraudsters sweat a little bit.

Banning and deleting from social media groups: A small number of these fraudsters operate within professionals sourcing groups where companies will advertise work. It's important that they are banned from such groups. Most I think now are. It's also important people stop working for them. There are a small handful who will try and source the work out. They do so after charging extortionate, unfair, and unreasonable prices. Taking away the ability to source the work out, takes away another one of their lifelines!

Leave negative feedback: Where possible, leave some form of negative feedback, although this can be often tricky as many won’t have a platform such as Facebook, Google maps, Yell, and Bark, to name a few, where they would leave themselves wide open to criticism and negative feedback.

Carry out due-diligence. Do your research. Don't be a victim!

Conclusion: As the private investigations industry continues to evolve in an increasingly complex world, the battle against fraudsters becomes crucial. By acknowledging the existence of these deceitful individuals, taking proactive measures to prevent their influence, and promoting ethical behaviour among legitimate professionals, the industry can hopefully reclaim its reputation as a trustworthy source of truth and justice. Clients deserve nothing less than the assurance that their pursuit of answers and clarification will be conducted by reputable, legitimate, and professional investigators committed to honesty and integrity!

My biggest issue is that anyone can have a well-made website put together and throw a few thousand pound a month at Google Ads, and away they go. As a result, most of the above isn’t going to stop these fraudsters, certainly not overnight. It however spreads a message, and if you are a potential client doing a little bit of research and this stops you from being ripped off, let down and lied to, then that is a good result in itself!

Private Investigators are like the ones in the movies.....

I wish, wouldn't that just be super cool? Contrary to popular belief and portrayals in movies and TV shows, Private Investigators don't always engage in thrilling, high-speed car chases and dangerous stunts.

Our work, for the most part, involves lot's of research, static surveillance and documentation. A typical surveillance day may start before dawn, and then include a two hour drive to the job. Then eight, ten or twelve hours carrying out surveillance, with a two hour drive home, depending on where the surveillance concludes. In some cases we may end up two, or three hours further away. Sometimes we may end up closer to home. We then need to get home, download the footage and compile and in-depth and legally binding report for the client. It can often be the early hours of the morning before it's "lights out", only to wake up and do it all again a few hours later.....

An eight hour surveillance job can very easily become a fourteen or fifteen hour day, from start to finish. That eight hours of surveillance may be completely static, watching someone's front door. It may be a mobile job that requires mobile surveillance throughout both urban and rural areas. It may require foot surveillance via way of public transport. It may even require a mix of all of the above. Take into account the good old British weather too, January, February time, it's dark, wet and miserable...Need I say anymore....

We do encounter those job's that may get the endorphins going, but in truth, they are few and far between and nothing like the latest James Bond movie, quite the opposite infact!

Private Investigators have unlimited access to information......

The term "unlimited" I would suggest is a slight exaggeration. We have access to private systems and databases that allow us to obtain data. We have to be vetted to use these databases and pay a large premium for doing so - it is not cheap!

A common myth is that we can hack into phones. This cannot be done remotely, and if it could, it would be highly illegal. Wouldn't that be great though, if we could, we would never have to leave home or Birmingham office and would simply obtain everything we need by magically pressing a button that would allow us instant access to a subject's phone, wherever they may be throughout the UK.....There wouldn't be many of us left though, as we would all be serving time at His Majesty's pleasure....I talk about this a lot, if any company is offering this service, please, run a mile, you may as-well throw your money out the window. They may sound very believable, and dazzle you with lot's of technical jargon, but I can assure you, it will be a scam!

Any data we obtain, whether it be for a very basic trace or a more in-depth background check is done so legally and ethically, and within the law. Every document we produce, we do so with the view of it being potentially used for legal proceedings, and therefore being admissible in a UK court of law.

A large part of the data obtained is also done via OSINT methods. OSINT stands for Open Source Intelligence and is the act of gathering and analysing publicly available data for intelligence and investigative purposes.

We can break the law......

Professional and legitimate Private Investigator companies should always adhere to the law. Although the industry is still unregulated, we have guidelines and processes that we must adhere to. The Regulation of Investigatory Act 2000 , also known as RIPPA is one of the main acts/guidelines that we must adhere to. It essentially governs the use of covert surveillance by public (and undercover bodies).

For example, we can't film through people's windows, we can't climb a tree in someone's back garden and sit there snapping away, we can't sit on someone's private property and film without consent, we can't film or deploy devices under doors, or through letter boxes, we can't gain access to someone's house or vehicle without their consent. It may all seem like common sense, but believe me, we take enquiries almost daily where the client expects the above....I'll perhaps do another blog at a later date that is specifically orientated around the law, what we can and cant do, and the grey areas we often fall into (vehicle tracking being one of those). Essentially we cannot engage in anything that may be deemed illegal - trespassing, invasion of privacy, harassment, hacking, wire tapping to name a few. Filming in the public domain, covertly or overtly without breaching any of the above is absolutely fine and most professionals who work within the industry are able to do so in order to obtain the evidence required.

We always wear disguises......

There is actually a small element of truth in this. Disguises may be used and worn occasionally, but most of the time, investigators prioritize blending into the surroundings to gather information discreetly.

We often think about where we are going and the local demographic in that area. For example, if I am on a surveillance job in the back streets of Stoke-on-Trent, with a good possibility of a foot follow into the local shopping centre, I will dress very differently to a surveillance job that I am on in Central London, where the subject is thought to be dining at the Bulgari Hotel, or the likes of. It all boils down prior planning, and having that knowledge and experience to be able to adapt and dress according to the situation and location.

Of course, there may be times when we have been following a subject all day, and we then need to change our appearance. Caps, glasses, change of top or shoes usually does the trick and can be done if carried in a 'go bag'. Most Private Investigators will also have a box of 'props' in their car. These may be used for door knocks or tricky Op's where we simply can't plot up discreetly and covertly without giving anyway exposure.....

The work is glamourous.....

This is generally not the case. I would say 'interesting, demanding and stressful' would be better fitting adjectives to use. Investigative work involves a lot of patience, research and documentation. It involves long periods of time being sat still and often alone, in silence. It is certainly not as glamourous as it is portrayed in the media and on television.

In some instances we may be starting work before dawn, we may be working through the night and in risky areas. Take into account the weather too. When it's 35c and your sat in your vehicle that has now turned itself into a sauna. We can't just start up the engine and turn the AC on. We of course have fans and cool boxes filled to the brim with cold drinks and ice, but at best, that just makes it ever so slightly more bearable.

The same in winter when it's -5c outside. Although I personally find it easier to keep warm when it's cold, as opposed to trying to cool down when it's ridiculously hot. It can have an affect on one's health too. I look fifteen years my senior and carry a few extra pounds through the many thousands of hours sat on the back seat of my car. You'll be doing well if you can find a surveillance operative who is in tip top condition and looking anything other than 10 years his or her senior - I think most in the industry will agree.....

Remember, Private Investigators play a vital role in various fields, often working diligently behind the scenes to gather accurate and reliable information within the boundaries of the law. As I mentioned above, it is vitally important that all evidence produced is done so legally and therefore admissible in a UK court of law. It's also important to remember that there is time involved with planning every investigation. Often several hours prior to an investigation starting, and then travelling to and from the investigation start and finish location, along with client updates and calls and then the compiling of the evidence via way of report once home, which, depending on the size of the investigation and amount of footage obtained can often take between three and four hours, without any hiccups....If you're booked in for the next day, it's lights out, usually in the early hours, to wake up several hours later and do it all again!

The price quoted for any job should reflect all of the above too. If someone is quoting you a days surveillance for the price of a pair of new trainers, are you really getting all of the above? Are you getting a professional service, probably not!

Likewise, if you are being quoted many thousands of pounds for a day or two's investigation, find out why, ask for a breakdown of costings!

Anyway, I'm going slightly off topic here.

To summarize, the public perception and reality of the Private Investigations industry are worlds apart. I could probably write twenty common myths, but with blog writing not being my forte, I will happily leave it at that!

Take a good look at their social media pages also. Often you will see many examples of their work on such pages. This also shows an element of transparency with regards to what they do and the quality of their work.

If there is no sign of anything relating to the company outside of their well designed website you should be asking why? 5. Price And Initial Consultation

If they’re very cheap:

Where Do The Trackers Work And For How Long?

Our GPS vehicle trackers work in the UK and Europe.

Over recent years we’ve had subject vehicles travel to Ireland, the Netherlands and France from the UK.

The data can be viewed from anywhere in the world, providing you have a WIFI or 4G connection.

We have two types of GPS vehicle trackers. Both offer exactly the same operating software but differ in battery size.

The 6500mah battery has a battery life of approximately four weeks, is small in size, great for shorter jobs and is easier to hide.

We then have a slightly larger tracker that uses a 20,000mah battery. These last for approximately three months and are great for much longer surveillance jobs.

Is It Legal To Track Your Partner?

In the UK there has never been an incident where someone has been taken to court for using a vehicle tracking device to track just their spouse. In some ways it is a grey area and open to interpretation.

It is certainly not illegal to install a tracking system in a vehicle if you are the vehicle owner and you can track other users such as your spouse so long as they give permission.

If the vehicle is co-owned by both parties, either party may install a GPS tracker to secretly track the other.

A number of courts already ruled on the topic and allowed the evidence gathered from the co owned vehicle to be admissible.

Trackers do not record audio, nor do they take photographic evidence and are deployed onto the exterior of a vehicle so are seen as less intrusive.

We would always argue that the tracker has been deployed in the interest of our client and for the purpose of giving them a positive result due to their unfortunate circumstances.

Private Investigators are not allowed onto an individual's property without consent. This may be seen as civil trespassing.

Most of the time our clients reside at the address where the tracker is being deployed and can give consent to deploy the tracker.

It is vitally important not to damage a vehicle whilst installing a tracker. This would be seen as criminal damage.

There is no reason why any operative deploying a GPS vehicle tracker should have any need to physically touch the vehicle at any other time than the split second in which they deploy the tracker.

For a Private Investigator to be able to deploy a tracker they simply need to be able to get near to the vehicle.

Whether it is on the side of a public road, in a car park or on a driveway. Usually twenty seconds under the vehicle is enough.

Can the vehicle tracker be found?

As experienced private investigators in Birmingham & Manchester we know the areas where it is best to place GPS tracker devices so as to avoid being discovered, even with someone looking for it. There have been dozens of occasions where cars have gone through inspections such as MOT's without the tracker being noticed.

The GPS vehicle trackers are magnetic with a pulling weight of about 70kg, so there’s no need for any sort of hardwiring to the vehicle battery, like in the days of old. They are extremely unlikely to become accidentally detached from the vehicle.

This also allows the tracking device to be placed quickly and discretely on the vehicle without any need for adhesive or time spent fitting.

A Cheating Husband Caught

Anderson & Co Private Investigators were contacted by a woman whose husband worked away. He held a senior position within a company he had worked with for many years. Our client had suspected that something wasn’t right for quite some time as he had become very distant and disconnected.

He would leave the house on a Sunday evening and drive the 240 miles to his workplace. He would work throughout the week returning on a Friday evening. He had been doing this for many years and held a responsible position within a large corporate company.

Our client mentioned him always going offline at around 8pm and claiming to be going to bed. He would often call around this time and then nothing would be heard from him until the following day.

I advised our client that we should deploy a GPS tracker onto his vehicle to establish his movements. If he had indeed been going to bed then we would expect his car to remain in the hotel car park where he was staying, but if there was something more sinister going on then we would see the car moving shortly after 8pm.

The following weekend when our subject was next home we were able to deploy the tracker onto his car. He then left for work on the Sunday afternoon as he would normally do.

He arrived in the area close to his workplace approximately four hours later and as expected called our client just before 8pm. He claimed he was tired (as expected) and said he was going to bed as he had a long week ahead with some important meetings the following day.

Shortly after this phone call we were able to see his vehicle moving.

He In-fact drove to a residential address about ten minutes away from his hotel. Our client sat and watched as the vehicle remained there throughout the night and into the morning. At 06:50 in the morning his vehicle left the residential address and went back to the hotel. It remained at the hotel for approximately 40 minutes before moving again and going to the workplace for an 8am start.

Our client had suspected something like this for quite some time but when faced with hard evidence she found it hard to take. This was now all very real and her life in a matter of minutes had been turned upside down.

She also had two children and an important job that she had to focus on while discovering her husband was indeed with another woman and seemingly living a complete lie.

We decided to monitor via the tracker only throughout the first week. The husband continued to spend his evenings firstly back at the hotel and then would leave for the residential address just after 8pm.

On the Monday of week two we had him under surveillance. We were able to observe him arriving back at the hotel. He ate alone in the restaurant and then returned to his room. Interestingly we noticed he also had two phones, of which our client had been unaware.

Just after 8pm our subject exited the property in casual clothing. Due to the intelligence we had gathered from the previous week we deployed the second operative at the address we had seen him visiting. Again, as expected, he turned up at the address. After a brief stop at a convenience store where he bought wine and snacks.

Totally oblivious to the fact he was under surveillance he walked into the property via the side entrance and didn’t leave again until the following morning.

This continued for several weeks, with Wednesday being a ‘night off’ and him remaining at the hotel.

We carried out checks on the property he was visiting and were able to identify the woman as someone who worked under him.

Our client managed to continue with several months of surveillance and investigations before she presented her husband with the evidence.

She actually presented the evidence to him one Friday evening when he returned from his week away working, along with the divorce papers for him to sign.

He denied it at first and there were threats, but there was no way for him to deny the evidence in front of him. He had to come clean.

The following Monday his line manager was informed of the relationship and he was given his notice.

Our client was able to put herself in a strong financial position and start moving forward with her life which was something she wished she had done several years prior.

How Can You Tell If You're Being Catfished?

Catfishing is when someone creates a fake identity using stolen pictures and false information. An important part of what defines catfishing is that it is entirely online.

The catfisher will not want you to see their face because they do not look or act like they would have you believe.

There are several different reasons behind why someone would do this and it is not always just about money.

The first thing that should arouse your suspicion is that you have developed a relatively close romantic relationship with someone, you talk a lot and get on well, but you have never met them or seen their face unless in pictures.

Here is a list of the most common things to look out for if you think that you are being catfished:

They Are Perfect

You have seen their profile picture and they are very good looking, in shape and photogenic. The backstory you get will be of someone who is a high achiever in several fields. They could be good at sport, musical or have a high powered job.

They will be using someone else's photos, often models from stock photos but sometimes minor celebrities.

In addition to that you will find in conversation that they have a lot in common with you and share your views on important issues. This is designed to lure you in to the idea of a fantasy life with someone who is such a good fit for you that you should not let them get away.

When a real relationship is in its early stages there will always be a time where both people only present their 'good side' to the other so you should expect a certain amount of this anyway.

However a real person will usually express an opinion on something if you ask them without expressing an opinion yourself first.

This is important because a catfisher will not want to commit to an opinion without knowing yours first. Look out for evasive language or changing the subject when you ask.

There Is A "Sob Story" Or Sympathetic Angle

There is usually a component to their story that is designed to generate sympathy which will be used to manipulate your emotions at key times.

When someone needs to manipulate over a period of time they need to make you admire them (the perfect career or sporting achievement) and they need to have a way of making you feel sorry for them if you are not complying with what they want.

Look out for a change of tack if they ask for something and you do not agree. Do they tell you a story that make you feel sorry for them?

The Relationship Moves Very Fast But Only In Certain Ways

They will want to progress parts of the relationship very quickly to generate the level of trust and intimacy that is required to manipulate you.

Are you being told they could spend the rest of their life with you? That you have a deep emotional connection? But they won't meet for some reason?

There are identifiable stages to most relationships

Attraction - Honeymoon phase which typically lasts a few months
Reality
Commitment
Intimacy - After a year or so
Engagement

If you are being catfished then there will be signs of commitment that you would expect in the intimacy stage but you will have it in the attraction stage. They want to gain your trust quickly and make you believe that the relationship you have is too valuable to waste.

They will not meet you

Catfishers are usually very well practiced so virtually all will have a story on why they cannot meet with you already planned out.

This could be that they are abroad or very busy with their "high powered career".

Either way you should look for opportunities to meet with each other even if it's just a suggestion. That way you can gauge their reaction.

They Will Not Video Call With You

These days speaking to people face to face is so easy and free that you would expect to be able to do it without issue.

A catfisher cannot allow you to see their face in real-time so they will make any excuse to avoid it.

There will be IT issues, broken phone or web cam, internet issues or they will have a reason to be not available.

Watch out for the sympathy angle too. Are they saying that they don't look good enough or that they've put on weight and want to lose it before they see you?

Their Social Media Profile Is New And Not Well Filled Out

A catfisher will need to re-invent themselves several times to con new people so there will not be a lot of social media history.

There will always be more than one picture but rarely more than five. A real person will generally have more than this. Even if they are shy they will often share pictures of their children, pets or even the sport team that they support.

A few years of pictures and friends interacting with them is a good sign that they are a real person.

They Need Money

A massive red flag is if they need money for something. Often this will be tied to their backstory e.g. they are abroad and need money to come and see you. There might be some reason why they claim to not have money at the moment that will involve a situation which leaves them temporarily poor such as legal issues with an unscrupulous former business partner.

Straight away they have a story which explains why they cannot meet you, a story that generates sympathy and a need for money in the short term.

You should never send money to someone you do not know in real life.

Search For Their image Online

If they are using someone else's photo then they will have gained this image online. You can find this by using Google's reverse image search. Click here for instructions on how to use this.

If you met them through an online dating site then this will show if they have used this image elsewhere.

Search Their Online Profile

You can search for their phone number to see if it comes up elsewhere or with any warnings.

Most people have a LinkedIn profile which should show their current employment which could corroborate their story.

Gently Investigate Their Story

If they say that they are from a specific area then look up that area and ask if they know or have been to certain places nearby.

If they work in an industry then look up some facts which you can ask them about. Frame it in a way that makes you look like you are taking an interest rather than interrogating them.

Background Check

The most concrete way of investigating someone is by hiring a private investigator to perform a background check .

This will give you their address, real name, aliases, employment and criminal record.

At least this way you can be sure about their true identity either way.

How Can A Background Check Stop Catfishing?

A lady contacted us feeling quite distressed. She had indeed fallen in love with a man she had met online. She said that she felt embarrassed as an intelligent and successful woman she wasn't sure how she had gotten herself in this mess.

The male she had fallen in love with she had met on one of the better known dating sites some two years ago. Since then, they would text back and forth daily.

Bizarrely throughout the two years, they never once met, although he would send her nice gifts to both her office and home address.

Even more bizarre was the fact that he had not once made any attempt to video call our client and would only send voice notes. He also claimed to be abroad a lot of time working, with investments in the Middle East and so on.

Hiding behind his chiselled good looks from images on the dating app our client fell for it. Intimate messages were often exchanged, and feelings became intense.

Time after time, however, they arranged to meet, and he would cancel.

Our Client knew something wasn't right and then reached out to us. She started to quiz him, but he had an answer every time.

Often outlandish excuses and stories, but he was convincing. He'd clearly been doing this for many years.

With only a phone number and a handful of pictures to look at we were firstly able to confirm the name of the individual behind the phone number.

This indeed was a much older male, living with his elderly parents and seemingly unemployed.

Never married, with no children and seemingly having the profile that was very suggestive of him being a bit of a loner. We were then able to locate social media accounts, addresses, and family information for our Client- an extensive background was carried out! Of course all done legally and ethically.

We then ran the images she had from his dating site profile through our facial recognition systems and were able to confirm that the images were actually that of a lower league football player and he was actually 32 years older than the footballer that he had been using as his alias.

Our Client was understandably shocked and devastated, to say the least. She had shared intimate pictures and videos with this man, she had shared her lifestyle with him and made plans to be together with him moving forward.

Although she had her suspicions, she wasn't quite prepared for the level of lies he had produced throughout the two year period.

Why Do People Catfish?

The most common reason to catfish is to obtain money from people fraudulently. A lot of cases will involve a professional fraudster who creates multiple online profiles on dating and social sites and carries out multiple catfishes.

However there can be other reasons as well which are more obtuse. There have been cases where people have fake profiles due to their own low self esteem. They are not trying to get money, they just wanted to live a life that they covet which they could not lead in the real world.

Other cases have involved people exploring their sexual identity. Their online fake profile might be homosexual or transsexual and the online world offers a place where they can live an alternate life without fully committing to it.

On the face of it this is not necessarily a bad thing but you have to remember that the other person in this couple is a victim who has been misled and manipulated.

Targeted revenge or harassment is another more sinister motive. In these cases the catfisher will know their target and their purpose is to deliberately embarrass them or make them feel vulnerable.

One strange case is that of Dave on Wheels . This is where a man named David Rhodes invented an online character who was a paraplegic, deaf boy with cerebral palsy.

Dave On Wheels blogged and tweeted online regularly about his illnesses and how he was dealing with it in an inspiring way. This had gained him many followers and there were several offers of charitable aid.

Some websites picked up on the inspiring story of Dave On Wheels and covered the story. Overnight Dave On Wheels became an online celebrity.

The reality was that Dave On Wheels was fake and when he became famous his (also fake) sister messaged that he had fallen into a coma and then later on that he had died.

Kim Kardashian even tweeted her condolences.

When the truth was discovered David Rhodes said that Dave On Wheels was in fact simply 'part of his psyche' and had been invented to help with his own depression. He said that fame had never been his intention.

Where Does the Term Catfish Come From?

The term “Catfishing” comes directly from a 2010 documentary film where a man named Nev Schuler presented his own experience of being conned online. This was back when this practice was not well known.

The reason that the 'catfish' is used is down to a myth about how fish are shipped as recounted by the 40 year housewife in the documentary who had been pretending to be a 19 year old girl online.

She said that cod fish were shipped with other fish in the same tanks to ensure the quality of the cod fish due to catfish nipping at them. This would then stop the cod from becoming lethargic and atrophying.

She then said that people like her were the catfish, keeping people 'on their toes' and always guessing.

What Are The Steps To Finding Someone?

1. Write Down What You Know About Them

This may seem like an odd thing but writing the list will keep a record of everything that you know about them plus the process is likely to jog more memories.

Each item of information, no matter how small, could be of use at some point. Even strange details like height or hair colour to who they used to be friends with or their middle initial.

What was their last known address and when did they live there?

Do you have their old phone number or email address?

Where did they work or what school did they go to?

Write down everything!

2. Utilise Search Engines

The next step is to use online search engines such as Google or Bing. This is where all the information you have written down will come in handy.

Run through searches using various combinations of the information that you have. You do not need to use all the data at once or even all combinations.

For instance use the name and their old address, then their name and their old phone number, then their name and old affiliations such as sports clubs.

Use The Search Engine Tools

Use quote marks around names when you want to search for the full phrase such as "John Smith" along with other keywords.

Use a "-" before any words that you want to take out. For instance if you search for "John Smith" you might want to filter out any results that include "beer".

Switching to image view will help trawl through multiple options when there is a common name, such as John Smith.

Search engines could find names or addresses in online directories. Even if you do not find the exact information that you want, you are still able to find directories that you can perform other searches in or find additional information which may prove useful at another point.

3. Trawl Social Media

Facebook will probably be the most useful for people's searches. You can search by name or even look at pages such as employers, sports or social clubs to see who is a member.

Try looking for known friends or family that could lead on to the person that you are trying to find.

Twitter or Instagram often have "handles" rather than real names plus there are no friends or associations which means that they are a lot less likely to have any use.

LinkedIn could be very useful if you know their old employer or education plus the profile pictures are often the clearest. Be aware that if you view someone's profile they will be made aware that you have done so.

Who Else Did They Know?

If you cannot find them with the information that you have, then try to get in contact with mutual friends. Other people may be easier to find or you may know more about them.

Reach out to them to see if they are either still in contact or may be able to point you in the right direction.

Is Privacy Important?

The disadvantage here is that the person that you are searching for will most likely be made aware that you are trying to find them.

It may also become public knowledge amongst your friends or family that you are searching for someone. There are numerous occasions where this can cause upset. Your adoptive parents may not understand if you are searching for your biological parents. One friend may not like that you are getting in touch with another long lost friend.

Re-uniting A Family

A client came to us after actually being let down by another company. She was a West Indian lady who was born here in the UK.

Her mother was in her mid teens at the time of her birth and unable to take care of her. Our Client, only 10 weeks old at the time, was then taken in by a loving family who were able to raise her properly, which she was very thankful and grateful for.

However, now in her late 20's and raising a family of her own she wanted to find out firstly if her mother was alive and well, and secondly where she was living.

She had a full name and an approximate age for her biological mum. Although she wasn't sure of an exact date of birth.

We were able to run the information through our systems and databases, and with relative ease were able to identify the woman in question. On doing so we could see she had in fact been anchored to her current address for many years, and only a 30 minute drive from where our Client lived.

We handed the address over to our Client who was over the moon that we'd been able to locate her biological mother, along with a contact phone number and some co-occupancy data suggesting she had siblings too.

Our Client then came back to us for a background check . She wanted to know more. We were then able to confirm that the co-occupants were indeed her siblings, her mother had also married and they had the usual social media accounts for our Client to see.

Online dating is a fast growing industry with more and more people trusting dating sites to meet potential partners. Whilst the majority of dating site users are (relatively) truthful the mechanics of meeting people online allows lots of opportunity for sexual predators.

Recent surveys have shown that 59% of internet users feel that dating websites are a good way to meet people and they are. There are many advantages to an online service such as matching politics or interests with potential dates beforehand.

However there are people who will create misleading profiles to trick people into a relationship by misrepresenting themselves.

These people are often practiced liars and will not show the normal signs of deceit when you are speaking to them. Additionally, these online predators will have discovered many new ways of creating fake evidence to back up their stories when needed beyond a fake profile.

They will often target vulnerable people, especially those who are lonely or recently had a bad breakup.

In a lot of cases you will fall completely in love with them and trust them more as a result. The relationship may be extremely romantic and caring on the face of it. There will always be tell-tale signs of deception if you know what to look for.

They might be serial daters or may even be already married.

Important Signs That They Are A Sexual Predator

They Tell You That There Is Something Very Special About Them

This is very important and is key to the lie. Predators will always tell you that there is something that makes them stand out from the crowd.

This will make them seem more attractive and desirable and gives them a better chance of tricking people.

In almost all cons there is always an element of offering the things that the person really wants. This can be love, money or fame.

People naturally will push harder to obtain it whilst ignoring the potential risks that they would have spotted otherwise.

These include:

Outlandish stories. Tales of heroism and danger which make them seem adventurous.
Sad stories involving the death of close family members or of losing everything. This is designed to create sympathy.
High powered jobs.
Rich family.
Connections that could help you. Such as for gaining modelling contracts or meeting celebrities.

They Are Usually Unavailable

Their job or lifestyle means that they cannot see or communicate with you for large parts of the week. This gives them the time to lead their "other" life.

There is a reluctance to call you outside of "working hours".
Unable to meet more than once or twice a month.

They Want To Meet Quickly

They seem to want to move your relationship forward very fast. On the face of it this will be presented as a whirlwind romance.

In reality it is because speaking online is not what the sexual predator is seeking.

Crime data produced for the UK Office For National Statistics suggested 43% of first face-to-face meetings between a victim and sexual offender took place within one week of their initial contact online .

You Never Meet At Their Home

The online predator will always need to keep you away from places that give away their real life. Maybe they have a wife or their home is not as fancy as they made out.

There is a reluctance to video call from home.
You have never been invited to the home address.

There Is A Lack Of Evidence Or Connections To Back Up Their Story

Never meeting their close friends and family.
Lack of social media.
Cropped pictures. Never showing a location or any personal identifiers.

Everything Is On Their Terms

The sexual predator is really only after one thing. If you are not providing it then you are of no use to them.

There is a lust and demand for sexual behaviour. They could demand video or phone calls at weird times, in their car or workplace (not at home).
Meeting you last minute on their terms.
Irrational and aggressive attitude if not obliging to their demands.
There is an escalation in their demands. Especially for sexual behaviour.

We were contacted by a client who had been dating a man for quite some time.

In fact she had been dating him for 8 years.

They were initially matched on a well known online dating site and within days they decided to meet.

The initial meet went well and our client quickly found herself falling in love with our subject.

He was a middle class man, living and working in Central London as a doctor. His hours were often long and time off was rare, therefore they only meet a couple of times a month.

Our subject claimed he had a reasonable amount of wealth and was actually from South America. He spoke Portuguese to a reasonable standard but rarely showed any proof of his wealth.

Throughout the eight year relationship our client started to become suspicious.

She only ever visited him at his home address once. This was indeed an apartment in central London, in a secure compound with security gates and doors. The property certainly wasn't high end expensive and they were only there for a matter of minutes.

However, our client noticed there were "signs" of a female having been there. Female clothing and feminine hygiene products. The subject made reference to having his sister to stay recently, although this had never been mentioned previously.

The client could never get him to go travel or spend any extended time with her.

She was from the South East Asia region and wanted him to travel with her on his time off. He always had an excuse and avoided the idea totally.

They would often go away for weekends too. He would always ask our Client to make the bookings, he would then give her cash.

As time went on our Client became more and more suspicious, and then decided to hire us to find out exactly who this man was.

She handed over his "name" and gave us what she thought was his apartment number and address.

We carried out a blanket sweep on the block of apartments and were able to confirm that no male of that name lived there.

We did a check on the apartment in question and could see a lone female lived there. There was no sign of our subject.

We then started to look at other apartments for "clues" and noticed a male with a similar Latino name living underneath the assumed apartment.

A closer inspection confirmed that this man had indeed lived there for many years, along with his wife.

Further checks were able to locate social media accounts for this man who had clear images of himself on these profile pictures. Our client, who at this point had gone into shock and denial, was then able to confirm this as her "man".

Once we had that information confirmed we were then able to carry out a much deeper check on this man. He was indeed of South American heritage, but was born and raised in East London. He worked for a large company in Central London within a sales type role and had been there for many years. His wife was a nurse and worked shifts, often working weekends and nights - this we believe allowed him to meet our client a couple of times a month without her knowing. He would use the nights she worked as an opportunity to visit her, as for the weekends away, we suspect he told her he was away with "mates" or the likes of.

Throughout the background check process we were also able to obtain other alias names connected to this male, some dating back to the late 1990's. There were several entries on different forums where previous victims had made reference to these alias names and warned of this mam being a complete fraud and Catfish.

Luckily for our client she never handed over any money. She never felt threatened and couldn't understand why he had done this. Although eight years of her life were wasted believing she was in love with someone who simply didn't exist.

Further to this our client was still not 100% convinced, she was in love with him after all.

So she therefore invited him round several weeks later and whilst he was in the shower she was able to take a sneak peak in his wallet, left in his jeans pocket. The names on his cards matched the male we had identified.

A very unpleasant situation all round and it was difficult for her to accept initially, but in the end she was happier that she had the truth.

This Should Be Illegal

There have been no cases such as this that have led to convictions in the UK although there are signs that this could be considered "rape by deception" in the future.

The US and Australia are potentially making moves to bring this in as law.

There are similar cases where a man was convicted for a very similar crime in Israel. A man named Eran Ben-Avraham was convicted of fraud for telling a woman he was a wealthy neurosurgeon in order to obtain a sexual relationship.

Another man, Zvi Sleiman, pretended to be a senior Israeli Housing Ministry official and promised his girlfriend an apartment.

Types of Extra-Marital Affair: The Power Affair

This is the type of affair which is frequently blamed on things like the power of celebrity or even "sexual addiction".

This is where a couple comes into contact and there is a significant difference in the power or prestige of each person.

The power can come from various sources which could include being a celebrity, a politician, elite sportsperson or anyone in the public eye.

These are the most obvious ones however it is far more common to have a disparity in income or physical power with members of the general public. This affair type happens if someone is suddenly taken with an attraction taken from situations where the other person is overtly in control.

This difference in attractiveness between both people is what differentiates this type of affair from a sexual affair .

Why Does It Start?

The key thing to look for here is that the less powerful person is attracted to the perceived power of the other. This should be separated from a sexual affair because it is not based upon sexual attraction it is attraction to power.

This would include:

Being someone's boss or being senior management.
Earning significantly more money than the person or having more authority in their job.
Being significantly more physically powerful. This will be important in areas where being physically adept or "tough" is considered desirable.

Evidence for the existence of this type of affair is easy to come by.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's affair with Jennifer Arcuri or Conservative MP Matt Hancock and his aide Gina Coladangelo show that people will cheat even if there is a significant disparity in the sexual attractiveness of both parties.

Can you think of a time when you have seen an attractive woman in a relationship with a man who is much less attractive but is physically powerful?

It is important to note that many sexual encounters can come from one of the people simply being very confidant. Confidence comes from and is displayed by people in power and is often seen as an indicator that this person is in control of situations.

Sexual addiction element is sometimes blamed because the powerful person can show addictive behaviours towards sexual infidelity. This is most probably due to the fact that finding sexual partners is very easy for them.

For cheating like this to happen there needs to be both the person in power and the person to enable their behaviour i.e. the person attracted to the power.

It is important to note that there does not need to be any form of marital dissatisfaction to trigger cheating or even an above average sex drive. The marriage could have been perfectly healthy until the specific situation of one spouse coming into contact with a powerful person at the right time.

Where Would It Start?

Work would be the most obvious place for an affair like this to happen in most cases as there is a clear hierarchy and differences in power.

Potentially a gym might be the source as people can often display their physical strength there.

From a social side there is a possibility of an affair if someone in your circle displays overt signs of authority, wealth or physical prowess. This could be something as overt as driving an expensive car to actually engaging in fighting with others.

Everyone would probably agree that these types of display are actually very commonplace and vary in their degree of subtlety but it will usually only work if the other party is in some way impressionable.

Some people are simply impressionable by their nature however others may just be in an impressionable state at the time which may be due to the level of power disparity e.g. with a celebrity.

Location or events can quite often play a large part in making someone impressionable. Examples of this could include being at a concert where a lead singer's perceived power is obvious.

Other examples could include business gatherings where a manager might address a room full of people. These are events that shine a light on the individual and can make them appear larger than life.

Events such as these can be the catalyst for an extra-marital affair.

There will be less of an emotional involvement to cheating like this which will result in a physical affair.

What Are The Signs?

There are different signs depending on whether you are the spouse of the powerful person or the impressionable one.

Spouse Of The Powerful Person

In the vast majority of cases the powerful person will spend a great deal of time engaging in the processes that make them powerful in the first place i.e. spending a lot of time at the office, gym or establishment that they own i.e. night club.

Therefore there may be plenty of opportunity for privacy or secrecy from their spouse. Additionally if their behaviour were to change then it would be much harder to notice.

If someone makes a lot of business trips then it will be hard to spot if some of these trips are used as cover to engage in an affair.

It is unfortunate but powerful people often either develop or already have a certain degree of narcissism to their personality. This is problematic as people like this will not show many signs of guilt or remorse if they are cheating.

Inconstancies In Their Story

The other side of this is that people like this will often not put as much effort into hiding their sexual relationship as much as others would. There could be signs of an affair that a more careful person would have hidden.

You should look for inconstancies in stories or explanations which would be the result of carelessness. Be on the lookout for gaslighting behaviour . This is where they will attempt to convince you that your perceptions or memories are incorrect when you challenge them.

The behaviour will always revolve around places and times where that powerful person is in control.

Spouse Of The Impressionable Person

The impressionable person should show many changes in their behaviour as they are not the person in control.

Their actions are often being governed by the other person even before the affair so they will generally "do as they are told".

Because of this they will not be able to control their schedule as much as they would normally and as a result there will be changes in their habits.

Changes To Schedule

They may consistently spend longer at work, gym or places of socialisation without much notice or preparation. They are not the ones governing their behaviour at these times.

As a result they will not be able to take steps to conceal the affair in the same way that others would.

Lack Of Planning

There may be evidence of physical affair or dishevelling of clothing or hair which could have been covered up with a change of clothes or time to redo themselves but they did not get the opportunity.

One of the strange side effects of attraction to powerful people is that it wears off very quickly when they are not in contact.

There are several different types of marital affair which do not have to have a sexual element to be considered cheating. Emotional cheating can be just as damaging to a relationship and can also often lead to a physical affair as it develops.

20% of British adults admit to having an affair in online polls and 50% of those have had more than one.

Men are generally more likely than women to have repeated affairs however only 8% more than women.

However the definition of what is considered an affair seems to vary slightly from person to person. Some regard kissing as an affair but others require having slept with someone.

This article will talk through how the different types of affair can be defined, where they usually start and how you can prove that they are happening.

In all cases you should look for a consistent change in behaviour in your partner however what that behaviour is will be different depending on the type of affair.

In this series of articles I will be discussing the different identifiable types of affair that there are, why it starts and how to spot the signs.

The Sexual Affair

This is the most common type and would probably be considered the standard definition of what is considered an affair.

This is when two people form a relationship entirely based on sexual attraction to each other and will deliberately seek out private opportunities to have intercourse.

This might develop into a fully fledged relationship with more emotional and supportive elements although that depends of a lot of different factors being right.

Why Does It Start?

These relationships start when two people come into contact who are sexually attracted to each other.

This may seem obvious but a significant amount of relationships are actually not formed around two people wanting to have sex with each other.

An important component is that the attraction is instantaneous, not an attraction that grows over time. Knowing someone better over time will dull sexual infatuation.

There are very strong emotions associated with this which can be both overpowering and exciting at the same time.

Generally men are more likely to engage in this type of behaviour and this is backed up by the kinds of people that they cheat with and by the underlying reasons. On average men have higher sex drives than women which is one of the main motivating factors.

When the reasons behind affairs were polled men outscored women 2 to 1 for "I was dissatisfied with my sex life".

Not getting enough sex to satisfy their drive or sex in the way that they wanted will be the main motivator for these affairs. This will often be used as a justification for the behaviour.

Look out for signs such as constant requests or demands for sex (which are not satisfied) which then suddenly wane, stop or increase. This is the change in behaviour you should be wary of as it shows that either their sex drive is being fulfilled elsewhere or that there is a sudden increased desire or interest in sex.

Bear in mind that the affair will start due to sexual desire. This does not mean that your partner intends to end your relationship or even to hurt you. This does not justify cheating in any way however it is important to identify the causes and that will tell you how to move on afterwards.

Where Would It Start?

The initial contact can be anywhere realistically although in the majority of cases certain things must be true.

Firstly there must be a place of contact but not extended time with each other. So this could be a neighbour, someone at the gym, a work colleague or even a partner's relative.

People who do not necessary spend a great deal of time with each other will often put in more effort into their appearance than with their partner. This is why people will view each other as more sexually attractive when they meet under these circumstances.

Of course if people make themselves more attractive at work or the gym they will look their best when socialising. This could be large social gathering such as weddings but also restaurants, pubs, night clubs.

As the nature of the affair is physical there must be actual contact. These relationship would not form entirely online although it might start there.

It is important to note that alcohol and other disinhibiting substances will accelerate this process due to impaired decision making and ability to tell how attractive someone actually is.

What Are The Signs?

Physical Attraction

The first thing to look for is body language when you see both people interacting. It is usually fairly easy to tell if there is an attraction. Look for these signs:

Pupil dilation
Flushed skin
Seeking physical contact or closeness
Open body language
Mirroring each others body language
Taking secret opportunities to enhance their own appearance

It is very important to note that while these behaviours will be present for a sexual affair they do not indicate anything by themselves.

Opportunity

Opportunity is a major component whereby the affair partners must find places and times where they can be in private.

The thing to look for here is new periods of absence that are consistent or increasing. There may be good explanations for these periods such as business trips or going to the gym but you should be wary if they are increasing and becoming regular.

There must be a period of time which usually needs to last an hour or two and a place where they will not be observed.

They have to have privacy as the affair is entirely based on sex so there is no reason for any contact outside of sexual encounters.

How these opportunities come about will often depend on the circumstances such as business trips with work colleagues or periods where you are absent for neighbours.

Look our for other signs such as increased interest in your schedule. If your spouse is having an affair with a neighbour or someone close and the location is either house then they will need to establish when you will be arriving or leaving.

A common factor is that the cheating couple will be especially careful to cover their tracks and have explanations ready when the affair is new but their effort will wane as time goes on.

A simple test would be if you were to ask if you could come along on one of the trips or visit the gym to "try it". The cheater will have to find a way of stopping you.

How Can You Catch Them?

Trying to catch the cheating couple yourself will be extremely difficult. To start any action on your part will alert the cheating couple to your suspicions. If they become suspicious then they may choose to end the affair and then you will never know the truth.

Even if you manage to follow your spouse then the chances of you being caught are very high. They will recognise you, your clothing and your car very easily.

Even then, you do not have training in remaining covert whilst observing a target. How would you track them if they were driving?

That would mean potentially living with the doubt for the rest of your life.

Gaslighting is a process where one person in a relationship controls and manipulates the other by distorting their sense of reality and their memories. They will convince the victim that they are "imagining things", "remembering events incorrectly" or even "crazy".

More often this takes place in romantic relationships. Especially when there is a significant difference with the power of each partner. Such as when one person brings in significantly more income than the other.

Usually Gaslighting is used to control the other person, cover up lies or an affair and is considered a form of emotional abuse .

Cheating Partners

When one partner is cheating in a relationship there are always tell-tale signs of the affair. Late nights, changes to their routine or demeanour and hidden messages.

Often these changes will be noticed and potentially challenged by the innocent member of the couple.

Where were you? Or, who are you calling? These are not unusual questions and probably not even invasive in a long term relationship, if one partner is acting differently.

In the majority of cases the person having the affair will lie at this point, which may or may not be believed depending on how good the lie is.

However if the guilty party is a manipulative person they may "gaslight" their partner at this point to cover up their lies.

Is There A Gaslighting Personality?

Certain personality types are significantly more likely to engage in this tactic. Such as someone with a Narcissistic Personality Disorder

This can be individuals of either sex, although more likely to be men, which show a high sense of self importance, erratic or fluctuating emotions and who are obsessed with power and prestige.

It is important to note that this behaviour is meant to stem from severe low self esteem.

Characteristics:

Initially charming.
A need for admiration.
Lacking in empathy for others or animals.
Feeling superior to others with an inflated sense of their own achievements.
Having a fragile ego which results in aggressive outbursts when they cannot get their own way.
Dismissing the intelligence or competency of others.
Obsessing over those they view as having power or prestige.
Not wanting to try new things for fear of embarrassment or defeat.
Showing jealousy and believing others are jealous of them.

How Can You Spot Gaslighting?

There are two significant ways that you can identify if you are the victim of narcissistic gaslighting.

The first is spotting the manipulative behaviour patterns from your partner. The second is the affect that it has on you.

To spot the behaviour patterns you need to ask yourself whether you have been treated in certain ways on a reasonably regular basis:

They try and isolate you.
Being told that you could not last or survive without them or that your current life relies on them.
They do or say things to prevent you having a social life outside of them.
They belittle your previous accomplishments and make it sound like you could not achieve anything yourself without them. Often this abusive behaviour can be disguised as 'jokes' or 'banter'.
They act as if they are concerned about you and your mental health.
They lay the groundwork for you to believe that your feelings are not to be trusted by asking about your state of mind.
They point out times when you may have mis-remembered things and then re-enforce that it is one of your 'traits'.
If you try to get proof they insist that it is a sign of paranoia or mental health problems.
They remember things 'differently' to you.
They deny something that you thought was true but will not accept that you remember it differently.
They become angry or aggressive if you insist on your version of events.
They dismiss how you feel.
They say that you are fragile or over sensitive.
They lack any empathy with how you are feeling.
The events in your life are not considered as important.

What Affect Will Gaslighting Have On You?

You are a lot less self confident and more anxious than you used to be.
Your memory does not seem reliable to you and how you feel about people changes.
You apologise to everyone more often.
You question whether you are a good enough partner and whether you deserve to be in the relationship.
Things always feel like they are your fault.
Always making excuses for your partner's behaviour such as talking about the 'pressure' they are under with work.
You are more isolated from your family or old friends.
You struggle to make decisions by yourself and frequently defer to your partner when asked to make a decision.
Not enjoying things that you used to.

How To Deal With Gaslighting

Collect Evidence

Having solid evidence is key as neither party can then refute it. Do not let your partner find the evidence in case they try to destroy it.

Evidence will be the only way that you can prove to yourself that you are in a Gaslighting relationship.

Print or take pictures of suspicious messages. You can refer back to these when you start to doubt yourself.
Consider surveillance on your partner if you think they are cheating . Photographic evidence is hard to deny.
Write down what you think happened and how you felt in situations where you disagreed or were experiencing conflict. Refer back when you start to doubt yourself. Record the dates and times.

Deal With Your Anxiety

If you have been the victim of gaslighting then you will have a lot of anxiety. However anxiety from other sources can also cause you to mis-remember things or be over sensitive.

This is one of the reasons that this type of manipulation tactic works so well, as you can never be really sure in your own emotions simply as a result of building anxiety. The chances are that you actually will have mis-remembered something or been over-sensitive at some point due to the pressure.

These negative emotions create more negative emotions and the situation becomes a vicious cycle.

Therefore dealing with anxiety is something that you need to address specifically. Fortunately there are a good number of ways of doing this.

Reduce Caffeine Or Alcohol Intake
Improve Your Diet
Exercise Regularly

Involve Other People

Re-engage with your friends and try to get back to the hobbies and pastimes that you used to do. Being around the people you knew before will help you feel more like yourself.
Ask your close friends about how they remember situations if you feel like your memory is doubted. Be prepared that they may have little or no recollection of events which you regard as being very significant.

Gaslight comes from a stage play and later several films which all centre around an abusive relationship where a husband manipulates his wife into going insane to cover up his criminal activity.

It was written by British playwright Patrick Hamilton and is set in Victorian era London.
